Meet the Scientist

Meet the Scientists & Engineers

High School students will have the opportunity to meet scientists and engineers from our nation’s top STEM organizations at our “Meet the Scientist & Engineer” event taking place during the 2018 Festival Expo on Saturday, April 7th & Sunday, April 8th. Every hour students can conduct in-person interviews with scientists and engineers in the Career Pavilion. Sample questions to ask: What kind of work do you do on a daily basis? What keeps you going? What challenges have you encountered? What kind of training does one need to get your job?

Conversations with Chemists

Saturday, April 7, 3:00 PM – 3:50 PM

Chemistry provides us with clean water, medicines, food, fuel, and useful products, and studying chemistry teaches us about our bodies, our environment, and the universe. Have a conversation with the analyzers, problem-solvers, inventors, and explorers of our world—Chemists!

Advancing Science, Serving Society

Saturday, April 7, 4:00 PM – 4:50 PM

Sunday, April 8, 1:00 PM – 1:50 PM

New scientific discoveries are made every day! What is the future of science? How can you become a part of it? Come meet scientists from many different fields at AAAS Meet the Scientists, and talk to researchers about what they are working on right now. Ask your questions, and find out what it is like to be a scientist.

Be the Future of Innovation

Saturday, April 7, 11:00 AM – 11:50 AM

Take a moment to talk to the amazing engineers, technologists, scientists and other innovative individuals at Lockheed Martin. Learn about the projects they are working on that impact the world we live in, everything from space exploration and innovation in flight to the design of super small things through nanotechnology. Our professionals will engage with students to talk about their academic careers and how they overcame tough classes and challenges. Lockheed Martin is proud to be the founding and presenting sponsor of the USA Science & Engineering Festival. We firmly believe that advancing STEM education requires collaboration among industry, educators, policymakers, and families. The Festival is a great way to motivate students to pursue these disciplines, which we know are critical not only to our national security but also to our economic strength and our global competitiveness.

Turning Discovery Into Health!

Saturday, April 7, 12:00 PM – 12:50 PM

Revolutionary ideas often come from unexpected directions. Many concepts and tools central to understanding and improving health have come from basic, untargeted research. NIH not only supports these basic advances but also conducts the clinical and translational research that transforms discoveries into medical practice. NIH research addresses the health and well-being of children throughout their lives, from fetal development through adolescence. This research helps children, adults, families, and communities improve health so that our children can fulfill their dreams.  Come talk to our scientists, health communicators and allied health professionals.

Discovering the Forefront of Space Exploration

Saturday, April 7, 1:00 PM – 1:50 PM

At NASA, our mission is to pioneer the future in space exploration, scientific discovery and aeronautics research.  To do that, thousands of people have been working around the world – and in space – for more than 50 years to answer some basic questions.  What’s out there in space?  How do we get there?  What will we find?  What can we learn there — or learn just by trying to get there — that will make life better here on Earth?  Come meet with the scientists and engineers that are working to answer these questions – and learn more about what NASA is doing NOW!

Come and Find Out Where STEM Can Take You!

Sunday, April 8, 11:00 AM – 11:50 AM

Come meet engaging food, agricultural scientists and engineers from diverse backgrounds (i.e. industry, academia and federal). Scientists will answer all of your questions concerning their respective careers in agriculture. This session is meant to be informative and practical.  You will walk away with a greater awareness of how Ag scientists and engineers make contributions to domestic agriculture and beyond!

Super Science and Engineering

Saturday, April 7, 2:00 PM – 2:50 PM

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has been supporting super science and engineering for over 65 years. Basic research is the foundation upon which all great discoveries are made. Think of the last time you used a cell phone or touch screen, did a google search, or played a CD. Consider 3D printing, LED lights, and GPS. All of these, and much more were made possible or improved on by NSF funding. NSF plays a vital role in driving the U.S economy, enhancing our nation’s security and sustaining the U.S. position as a global leader. Come talk to some of the scientists and engineers at NSF who enable the advancement of discovery, innovation, and education beyond the frontiers of current knowledge, and empower future generations in science and engineering.

Small but Huge Impacts

Sunday, April 8, 2:00 PM- 2:50 PM

From brewing beer to bioremediation, microbial scientists span a wide range of different professions! Join us at the ASM Meet the Scientists to learn what microbial scientists do and to ask your questions.
