Dr. Ciara Sivels is a nuclear engineer at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. She supervises the High Energy Concepts section working on a variety of projects using radiation detection and modeling. She was named an IF/THEN Ambassador in 2019 by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). As an IF/THEN Ambassador she aims to advance women in STEM by inspiring the next generation of pioneers and has participated in many outreach activities including a docuseries, GoldieBlox cartoon, and the CBS show Mission Unstoppable. In March 2022, a 3D printed statue of Ciara and her fellow IF/THEN Ambassadors were displayed on the Smithsonian National Mall as part of Women’s History Month. Ciara obtained her PhD in nuclear engineering from the University of Michigan in 2018, becoming the first black woman to do so at Michigan. She also holds a Master’s degree and Bachelor’s degree in nuclear engineering from the University of Michigan and MIT, respectively. She is originally from Chesapeake, VA.
