Workshop Descriptions

Addressing the NGSS with The Science of Us from AstraZeneca

What actually happens inside our body when we have a disease? In what ways can we prevent certain health issues and maintain a healthy lifestyle? What innovative scientific solutions are being developed to help improve our health? Explore relevant middle school STEM experiences through the exploration of lung cancer research with AstraZeneca and Learning Undefeated.

Generation Health is a dynamic middle school program that aims to make science personal through a focus on healthy living messaging. This workshop will provide an overview of the Generation Health curriculum, including STEM learning activities where students investigate both preventative measures and innovative solutions to key health concerns in the areas of oncology, cardiovascular, and respiratory health. Educators will take an up-close look at the middle school, lung cancer unit activities where students do a deeper dive on lung cancer before taking on the role of a biomedical researcher, and engaging with real-life STEM professional skills and tools in the analysis of lung cancer. Educators will experience hands-on learning using ELISA kits and come away with a better understanding of how to incorporate these activities into your own curriculum.

No-Cost Resources for STEM Learning and Career Exploration from Discovery Education
