Professional Space Educator

Kevin J DeBruin

Get inspired while learning about space from this former NASA Rocket Scientist turned Professional Space Educator.

Senior Bioinformatics Scientist, Illumina

Janina Jeff, Ph.D.

Learn all about DNA storage and what we can discover from it with Illumina’s own Dr. Janina Jeff!

Music Notes

David "Mr. D" Landix and LaMar "Mr. Q-U-E" Queen

Join Music Notes for an unforgettable experience as Mr. Q-U-E and Mr. D combine their love of hip hop with their passion for teaching to create STEM songs that are sure to have you nodding your head and rapping along.

Engineer, General Atomics - Aeronautical Systems, Inc.

Debra Roy

This engineer from General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. will kick off the event with inspiring opening remarks!

Vice President, General Atomics - Aeronautical Systems, Inc.

Chuck Wright

Learn about manned and unmanned aircraft systems – how they work together and what their future holds – and how artificial intelligence can see what we cannot.

Scientist, San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance

Mrinalini Erkenswick Watsa, Ph.D.

Hear how this dedicated scientist hunts for DNA from endangered animals in the environment, in order to find animals, count them with more precision, and assist in making conservation decisions about their futures.

Workshop

The Gene-ius Gameshow

Join team members from Illumina and Generation STEAM to put your knowledge to the test by participating in this interactive and STEAM oriented gameshow! Learn from experts about genomes, DNA, and see what it takes to succeed in this industry. Answer trivia questions and watch live STEAM demonstrations to win prizes in this Gene-ius Gameshow!

Workshop

Lungs: the balloons that help you breathe!

Join graduate students from UCSD’s Bioengineering Graduate Society (BEGS) for an interactive workshop. Students will engineer a model of the heart-lung respiration system and understand various engineering applications (e.g. biomaterials, biomechanics).

Workshop

What does strawberry DNA look like?

Join graduate students from UCSD’s Bioengineering Graduate Society (BEGS) for an interactive workshop. Students will extract DNA from a strawberry and understand various genetic applications (e.g. bioinformatics, genetic engineering, cancer).

Workshop

Meddling in Matter & Magnetism - Sometimes a Repulsive Adventure!

We use magnetic fields to hold onto 100,000,000 K deuterium plasmas in the nation’s largest tokamak and allow fusion reactions to occur. Join General Atomics and build a small electromagnet that uses different core materials to produce different magnetic strengths. Learn about magnetic materials – what works, and what doesn’t in making an electromagnet. Find out where in your universe magnetic fields hang out. And see a unique demonstration using magnetics fields to launch normally non-magnetic items.

Workshop

What Can We Learn From Light?

Join General Atomics and explore the spectrum of different light sources and learn how light can provide information about what things are made of. Each student will construct their very own spectroscope to take home!
